讲座内容：

China has experienced large scale rural-to-urban migration amidst its fast economic growth during the past 30 years. Many school-aged children were left behind in villages after their parents moved to cities for work. The lack of parents’ caregiving at an early age could have a profound psychological impact on children. This study investigates the impact of parental migration on the risk behaviors of children left behind and focuses on the smoking behavior of children. By using the propensity score matching method, this study indicates that the lack of parental care is a significant factor that leads children to smoke. Children whose fathers have left the household for employment are more likely to smoke, while those with both parents absent have a much higher probability to smoke. This study highlights the impact of missing parental care on a large, vulnerable group of children who are left behind due to the massive labor migration and reveals a grave issue that needs to be addressed to end child neglect associated with parental migration.
